April 2026 Grand Opening!

OkawaJunya

April 2026 is a significant month for Japan, marking the grand opening of several major urban developments and the highly anticipated return of iconic cultural landmarks.

Here are three highly recommended spots for international visitors that are newly available as of April 2026:

1. Takanawa Gateway City (Tokyo)

This is one of the most significant urban redevelopments in Tokyo's history, located right on the iconic Yamanote Line. While the station opened earlier, the entire city complex fully opened on March 28, 2026, making April its first full month of operation.

  • Why it's great for foreigners: Designed by the world-famous architect Kengo Kuma, the district features "THE LINKPILLAR" towers and a massive park. It is designed as an "International Exchange Hub" with high-tech amenities, English-friendly services, and MoN (The Museum of Narratives), which uses immersive technology to tell stories of Japanese history and future innovation.

  • Location: Directly connected to Takanawa Gateway Station.

2. Edo-Tokyo Museum (Tokyo - Grand Reopening)

After a massive four-year renovation, this legendary museum in Ryogoku officially reopened its doors on March 31, 2026.

  • Why it's great for foreigners: It is arguably the best museum for understanding the transformation from the Samurai era (Edo) to modern Tokyo. The renovations have added even more interactive digital exhibits and improved multilingual support. The life-sized replicas of traditional Japanese houses and the iconic Nihonbashi Bridge are must-sees for those wanting a deep dive into Japanese culture without leaving the city.

  • Location: Ryogoku, Tokyo.

3. Nara Prison Museum (Nara)

While the luxury "Hoshinoya Nara Prison" hotel is slated for a June opening, the Nara Prison Museum (the public-facing part of this historic renovation) is scheduled to open on April 27, 2026.

  • Why it's great for foreigners: This is Japan’s first "prison-to-hotel/museum" conversion. The facility is a stunning Meiji-era red-brick structure and a designated Important Cultural Property. It offers a unique look at Japan’s modernization and architectural history in a way that is hauntingly beautiful and unlike any other tourist site in the country.

  • Location: Nara City, Nara (near Nara Park).
