OkawaJunya

Of course! Tonkatsu is a very popular Japanese dish of deep-fried pork cutlets, and Tokyo has many famous restaurants that specialize in it.

Here are some of the most highly-regarded tonkatsu restaurants in Tokyo, with photos.

1. Maisen (まい泉)

Maisen is one of the most famous and accessible tonkatsu restaurants, known for its incredibly tender pork cutlets that you can supposedly cut with chopsticks. The main restaurant is a unique, converted bathhouse in a stylish, Art Deco style.

  • What makes it special: The signature tenderness of their pork and the elegant, traditional ambiance of their main Aoyama location. They also have many smaller shops in department stores and train stations for quick, take-out tonkatsu sandwiches.

  • Locations: Main restaurant in Aoyama, but also many branches and take-out shops throughout Tokyo.

2. Tonkatsu Narikura (成蔵)

Often considered the pinnacle of tonkatsu, Narikura is consistently ranked as one of the best in Japan and is a destination for foodies.

  • What makes it special: The unique low-temperature frying method results in a very light, almost white, and crispy crust that locks in the juices of the high-quality pork. They are known for using rare and premium pork varieties.

  • Location: 6 minutes from Minami-Asagaya Station on the Tokyo Metro Marunouchi Line
12 minutes from Asagaya Station on the JR Chuo Line and Sobu Line
Be prepared for a long wait, as reservations are extremely difficult to get.
