1. Overview

The Kishiwada Danjiri Matsuri is one of Japan’s most famous, exhilarating, and high-energy festivals, with a history spanning over 300 years. Held in Kishiwada City, Osaka, local teams haul massive, hand-carved wooden floats called danjiri (weighing around 4 tons) through the narrow streets of the castle town at full sprint.
　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　

  • Highlight (Yarimawashi): The most exciting moment of the festival is yarimawashi, where the heavy floats navigate sharp 90-degree street corners at breakneck speed without slowing down.

2. Event Dates & Schedule (2026)🗓️

The festival takes place over two separate weekends. The September Festival is the main and most famous celebration.

  • Main September Festival:

    • Trial Run (Shiken-biki): Friday, September 18 (2:00 PM – 4:00 PM)

    • Yoimiya (Eve Festival): Saturday, September 19 (6:00 AM – 10:00 PM)

    • Honmiya (Main Day): Sunday, September 20 (9:00 AM – 10:00 PM)

(Note: A second, mountain-side festival also takes place on October 10–11, 2026).

3. Location & Access

  • Location: Around Kishiwada Station (Nankai Main Line) and the Kishiwada Castle district, Osaka.

  • From Osaka City Center (Namba Station):　

    Take the Nankai Main Line (Express) from Namba Station directly to Kishiwada Station (approx. 25 minutes). The festival area is right outside the station.

  • From Kansai International Airport (KIX):✈

    Take the Nankai Main Line bound for Namba and get off at Kishiwada Station (approx. 15–20 minutes).

(Important: Public transport is highly recommended. Major road closures surround the area, and driving/parking is not possible during the festival.)

4. Safety & Visiting Tips for Foreign Guests

  • Stay Alert: The heavy danjiri floats move extremely fast. Always follow the instructions of festival staff and police officers, and stay behind safety barricades/lines.

  • Wear Comfortable Shoes: Expect heavy crowds and plenty of walking.
