February Event in Japan 2026.2

OkawaJunya

1. Setsubun (Bean-Throwing Festival)

This is the main event in early February where you can experience Japanese traditions.

  • When: February 3rd

  • Where: Major temples and shrines nationwide (e.g., Senso-ji in Tokyo, Yasaka Shrine in Kyoto).

  • What it is: People throw roasted soybeans to drive away evil spirits (demons) and welcome good fortune for the coming year.

  • Key phrase: "Oni wa soto! Fuku wa uchi!" (Demons out! Luck in!)

  • Recommendation: Visit a shrine to see "demons" and join the bean-throwing ceremony. Don't forget to eat Eho-maki (lucky sushi rolls) while facing the year's lucky direction!

2. Sapporo Snow Festival (Hokkaido)

It is a world-famous winter festival, one of the largest in Japan.

  • When: Early February (typically for 7-8 days)

  • Where: Odori Park, Susukino, and Tsudome in Sapporo, Hokkaido.

  • What it is: Massive, intricate snow and ice sculptures are displayed. At night, they are beautifully lit up with projection mapping.

  • Recommendation: Try the local Hokkaido street food like grilled scallops and corn while enjoying the sculptures. It is very cold, so wear heavy winter gear and non-slip boots!

3. Plum Blossom Festivals (Ume Matsuri)

This plum blossom event will give you a taste of the early arrival of spring.

  • When: Mid-February to March

  • Where: Hanegi Park or Yushima Tenjin (Tokyo), Kairakuen (Ibaraki), Kitano Tenmangu (Kyoto).

  • What it is: Before the famous cherry blossoms (Sakura), plum blossoms (Ume) bloom with a sweet fragrance. It’s less crowded than Sakura season, making it perfect for a peaceful walk.

  • Recommendation: Plum blossoms represent "perseverance" because they bloom in the cold winter. It’s a great spot for photography!

4. Yokote Kamakura Festival (Akita)

This is a romantic event where you can experience the atmosphere of Japan's "Snow Country."

  • When: February 15th - 16th

  • Where: Yokote City, Akita Prefecture.

  • What it is: "Kamakura" are igloo-like snow huts. Inside, children invite you to have rice cakes (mochi) and sweet rice wine (amazake).

  • Recommendation: Seeing hundreds of mini-kamakura illuminated with candles along the river is a magical, must-see view.
